A lot of exciting things accompany the end-of-year Holidays. Family gatherings, gift exchanges, New Year’s resolutions have become a staple of the winter months, and depending on where and how you might celebrate- so does shopping!
Who doesn’t love hunting down the best retail deals? Many people take advantage of end of year sales to save on summer clothes as well as home appliances and electronics. Have a DIY project you prefer to be a little more affordable or looking to save on that set of tools you’ve had your eye on all year? Maybe those end of year sales help propel your gift shopping to the finish line.
No matter your seasonal shopping habits, one thing that many don’t think about is how to prepare your home for an influx of gifts, be them clothes, home decor or electronics and appliances. We’re reminding everyone to consider 3 things to think about as we get ready for the holidays.
Prepare your Storage
Speaking of making room. It’s a good idea to prepare for the Holidays by also preparing the storage you use to keep seasonal clothing and house items. Clothes closets and racks should be examined for articles you no longer wear as well as the ones you might be replacing.
For that new holiday decor you just picked up? Make sure it has a place to go at the end of the year or else things are going to pile up! This makes it much harder to keep the home decluttered over the course of a year. Have an idea of what is going to stay out and what needs to go before you start shopping. Compile a few boxes marked for donation so those clothes don’t go to waste! Your future self is thanking you.
Donate the Excess
Outside of getting a refresh or an upgrade on your own belongings, one of the major perks of deal shopping is the opportunity to donate items to somewhere or someone in need.
Local shelters and non-profits often make use of well-working home appliances to service those in need. Swapping out your washer and dryer or pulling the trigger on that commercial fridge? Call your local shelter or non-profit to see what their needs are and how you might be able to help meet them.
The same goes with clothes you might find to be excess this season. For the purposes of storage alone, it is often a good idea to drop by a Goodwill or donation center to both serve a need and make space for an influx of deals and gifts this year.
Proper and Efficient Disposal
Deciding what stays and what goes can be hard. Navigating past gifts and items of sentimental value can sometimes be difficult when considering whether or not to just throw them away. For those things taking up space in your home that can be thrown away- remember to consider donation first.
If you’ve already cleared the appropriate storage space, know that you have that option as well. Everything else? We encourage you to do your research on how to dispose of certain items properly. Knowing the difference between what can be thrown in waste versus what can be included in the recycling isn’t only good for the environment, but it also allows you to have more room in each bun as you’re cleaning out your home!

We hope you’re as excited for the holidays as we are. There’s always something to be thankful for and your efforts to declutter your home may very well lead to a need being met somewhere else. Prep your home for the Holidays by getting your storage ready, donating excess items and disposing of the rest!
