As we’ve talked about in previous posts, each season comes with its own unique set of cleaning challenges. With the turning of summer into the fall, you might notice that different types of debris can accumulate in and outside your home. Here are some tips for preparing for the season’s change and some great ways to keep your home clean!
Get your entryway ready
As the air starts to cool and rain becomes more frequent in most states, it’s a good idea to prepare your entryway accordingly. Spray off your outdoor welcome mat and if you have an indoor one, give that one a wash as well. Loose debris like leaves and branches will more frequently make their way through the front door, so prep accordingly. If you have a shoe rack or mat, you might need to rotate and organize the footwear to reflect the season. The same can go for the coat closet as well! Some of that outerwear should probably come out of storage and be ready and available to help you and your family to stay warm and dry.
Rotating your Closet
Since we’re on the topic of season appropriate clothing- it is common for families to store some of their winter clothing out of the way during the offseason. Fall and winter clothes generally takes up more space so it makes sense to find them in an attic or guest closet during the warmer months. In addition to making things like coats, shoes, boots and hats available near your entryway- organize your closet for Autumn by rotating in some of the long sleeves, sweaters and jackets.
Check those filters!
A year round necessity, you might not even notice that your air filters need to be changed until your turn the heat on in your home. That distinctive smell of hot lint isn’t always an indicator that your filters are in need of changing, but make sure you check every month or so to stay on top of them- especially as it starts to get cooler outside.
The same can be true for your dryer vent. While it is good practice to clean these out after every load, keep in mind that when washing larger and warmer pieces, these filters will fill up faster. An overloaded filter makes it harder for your dryer to do its job and can be a fire hazard! Keeping it clean also keeps it safe.
Changing out bedroom linens
Nothing impacts your day like a good night’s sleep. As it starts to cool down, the need for warmer linens and blankets go up! Wash your duvet covers and blankets and get those changed up. This reduces the strain on your heating unit and keeps the energy bill a little lower. Also, don’t forget your mattress! In between cleans, flip your mattress to lengthen the life of your bed and keep it cleaner as it starts to cool down.
